After Retirement

Scrapping and retirement of Milwaukee and Southeastern Wisconsin Transit Equipment

After retirement, much of Milwaukee's transit fleet was scrapped at Oakland Car Station. Equipment was also scrapped at the Waukesha gravel pit and also by local salvage firms. Some equipment was sold to other operators or private individuals for continued use. Fourteen cars were scrapped at Fiebrantz Car Station after being "stranded" there after trackage to the facility was removed.

L-5, Lakeside Power Plant, 1965. Paul Weyrich photo.

Locomotive L-5 was built during WW II. It had a wooden body due to wartime steel shortages. The locomotive was not popular with crews and was said to shock people inside the cab on damp days. L-5 was retired by the late 1950s. Initially preserved, the L-5 was dismantled during the late 1980s. Its parts were used to restore other equipment.
